Remember When – Episode 44

0

Pew Pew…. Gotcha!

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… two young, wide-eyed children came across a science-fiction piece that would forever change their lives.  It was called Star Wars: A New Hope. Those two boys, Jay and Parris, would have no idea what wonders this movie might have in store for them, but little did they know that it would also change their lives.

This podcast takes an exclusive focus on Episode IV.  We start by talking about how we each were introduced to the series, the ways it shaped our childhood, and how it turned us into die-hard fans.  Our conversation rolls through the entire progression of the movie, with each of us talking about our favorite scene from the original, and how the movie has held up over time.

Towards the end of the podcast, we talk about the “evolution” of A New Hope (and we use the term as loosely as possible) as it has been through wave after wave of changes.  We look at the Special Edition update and how it actually manages to serve a good purpose for A New Hope in particular, and lament the loss of Han Solo’s backbone.  We also talk about our disappointment in the recent Blu-ray releases, and how George Lucas might just be one of the most brilliant business men of all time.

If you’re an RSS subscriber, either through a Feed Reader or through iTunes, Zune, or some other podcast downloader, you’ll find a special bonus download waiting for you!  Episode 44B was recorded immediately after our A New Hope episode, and talks exclusively about “new” stuff. Jay talks about his adventures and disappointments working through a back log of Breaking Bad, we talk about the fourth season of True Blood, the miasma of disappointment that was Torchwood: Miracle Day, and how Optimus Prime is now a heartless assassin as a result of Transformers 3.  This bonus podcast comes out to roughly 30 minutes of material, produced exclusively for our fans.  Thank you so much for your patience during our hiatuses.

As always, we thank our fans for their continued support and appreciation of the podcast.  It’s because of your kind words and well wishes that we continue to do this podcast as a labor of love.  If you’d like to leave us feedback, please feel free to give us a shout at our email address, or leave us a voicemail at 206-495-1732 (long distance charges may apply).  You can also join our Facebook group for up-to-the-minute information on our podcast releases, a first look at our upcoming live recording sessions, and to communicate with us and your fellow Remember When fans in between shows.  Check it out at this link.  You can also follow us on Twitter.

Please pardon our delay

Just a quick note to say how sorry we are with the delay in our latest podcast.

To say that we’re eager to talk about Doctor Who and Torchwood is an understatement.  The knowledge that Parris has mostly caught up with Doctor Who has left me an extremely eager co-host, waiting to hear what he thinks of the various seasons and companions.  And Parris is having a tough time keeping the lid on his feelings and opinions about the show.

Unfortunately, although we had plans to bring you the show last week, Parris picked up the flu and was down for the count during our regular recording schedule.  What’s worse, he found out this past Monday that he was going to need emergency oral surgery.   Just yesterday, he was at the hospital having that done.

The good news is, his surgery went well, and despite a little pain, he’s expected to make a smooth recovery in short order.  As soon as he’s able to talk again, we’re going to have our microphones out and recording.  We know how much our show delays can frustrate our fans, so we hope you’ll be understanding.  Sometimes, life just gets in the way.  And by “life”, I mean “a doctor’s scalpel”.

But we’re going to be back soon with the show.  We also have content for the website next week!  I’ll be giving you my final recap on what I thought of Dinner for Schmucks, I let you know what I thought of the first season of The Big Bang Theory (I’m almost done) and we’ll chat about the fall TV season (holy crap, it looks terrible).

So please know that we haven’t forgotten you, and our neglect is unintentional. Life’s just been crazy. We’re still here, we’re not going away, and we’ll be back in short order starting on Monday.  :)

Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Film Tangent!  For the past few months, you’ve heard Parris and I talking about the “Big Secret Plan”, and this is (most of) it.  We’re officially starting a brand new site today, focused exclusively on movies, TV shows, DVDs, Blu-rays, and the like.  This site will also become the official home of the Remember When podcast.

So why the change, you ask?  In truth, there were two reasons that prompted this.

First, we felt a little weird housing a Movie & TV podcast on a site whose main focus is about gaming.  That’s not to say we didn’t love our days of having Remember When featured on Talking About Games.   But a site like TAG prefers to talk about games (I know, go figure!) and there wasn’t a lot of room for us to talk about TV shows, movies, or DVDs in between shows.  That’s not to say that Talking About Games was a bad place.  Far from it!  But Parris and I needed a place that was focused primarily on stuff we love.

Our second reason comes with a tiny confession that will probably surprise no one:  We’ve come to love and adore our interactions with the Remember When page on Facebook.  They were the perfect outlet for us to talk about movies and TV shows in the gaps between our Remember When episodes.  It was so much fun to talk about our reactions to TV shows and movies, immediately after we watched them. But the problem is, Facebook doesn’t let us make long, elaborating posts.  It’s a medium of brevity, and we needed more room to talk.

As thus, we created our own site.  FilmTangent.com.  Isn’t that an awesome name?

Now, there are dozens of web sites out there in the internet right now (or so we’ve heard), so you’re probably wondering what’s the point of this one.

Well, for starters, Film Tangent is the new home for Remember When.  All of our program announcements, episode releases, and the like will be posted here.  You will not need to update your RSS feeds for the podcast episodes.  But we’re going to use this site to keep you in the loop about the show.  And to make it even more fun, we’re also going to start polling you on our topics for upcoming episodes.  Yes, that’s right.   You’ll have a chance to vote on which “Great Movies Jay Has Never Seen” will be in the next episode.

Parris and I also plan to use this site to start talking at length about our opinions on TV shows, movies, DVDs, and the like.   Want to know what we thought of Inception, or Salt, or Shrek 8?  You’ll find it here first.

In the future, we’re going to be adding more features, like reviews, multimedia content… and yes, even interviews and conversations with people in Hollywood.

Our official opening day will be on Friday, July 2nd.  But we’d like to welcome our beta testers to the site, and we hope you’ll stick around.  We’re about to take you on a wild ride.

And lastly, we want to say Thanks to all the people that have helped make Remember When the mini-phenomenon it is.  Through your feedback, your iTunes ratings, your comments, and your participation, you’ve turned a tiny little podcast into something big.  Now we’re taking that one step further.  We couldn’t have done it without our fans and our friends.
