Remember When – Episode 39

3

After an unintentional hiatus due to real life, we’re pleased to bring you the glorious return of the Remember When podcast!

Although we promised you a Doctor Who & Torchwood episode, we’re pushing that off slightly.  At the top of the show, we explain why we’re postponing our venture into the realm of British sci-fi, and why the delay means better things for our listeners.

We spend the rest of Episode 40 talking about our views on other TV shows, both spectacular and spectacularly bad.  First up, we cover the third season of True Blood.  With the series finale airing last month, we look back at the season overall and discuss the elements we loved, the pieces that failed miserably, and what we think needs to be fixed before Alan Ball and the cast and crew start working on the fourth season.

Then we take a long awaited dive into the deep end of Mad Men.  Jay’s finally caught up with the show, and as AMC puts the fourth season to bed, we take a comprehensive look into the first few years of the show, talk about Jay’s experiences with getting invested in this AMC marvel, and Parris’ viewpoints on the complexities of the Draper family, and why they’re so fascinating to watch.  We talk about some of the unsung heroes of the show, our favorite moments, and why this can be a tough sell for new viewers.

We spend the last 30 minutes of the show working our way through the Fall season.  It’s been a lamentable slate of releases over the past few months, with early cancellations and very few stand out shows.  We talk about why this Fall TV season seems like one of the worst in recent history, some of the early standouts for us, and more.  We also discuss the remainder of episodes for Remember When in 2010, and the Big Movies we’re tackling at the start of 2011.

It’s a show filled with loads of tangents, as you’ve come to expect. The audio quality may be slightly off at points.  We apologize for that, and will work to have that fixed for our upcoming Doctor Who episodes.

Remember When is returning…. TOMORROW!

2

After a long and unintended hiatus due to medical issues beyond our control, Remember When is FINALLY making a return tomorrow night.  That’s Tuesday, October 19th.  We’ll be recording at 10pm Pacific, and as always, our podcast recording will be broadcast live on Ustream.

Tomorrow night’s episode will be covering the Fall TV season, with a healthy dose of conversation about Mad Men, True Blood, some of our summer favorites, and our thoughts on the general Fall TV lineup and what we’re watching.  It’s going to be a fun hour, with two friends sitting back down in front of their microphones, talking about what they love and getting caught up about something they’re passionate about.

If you’re wondering about our Doctor Who discussion, it’s still coming.  It won’t be covered in tomorrow night’s episode.  We actually have a Very Special Announcement to make about our upcoming chats about Doctor Who and Torchwood, so listen in tomorrow night for the details.

Thank you so much for your patience, the kind words you’ve sent us via email, Facebook, and Twitter, and the messages we get in our voicemail.  We hope you can join us tomorrow night!

Remember When – Episode 38

Parris and Jay vs. The World

Prepare yourself for a battle royale.  Remember When is back with a new podcast, and this time, it’s a battle of opinions!

We sit down this week for a quick episode, as we look back on our respective experiences with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.  Jay loved it passionately, Parris hated it to the point of nearly walking out.  With two diametrically opposed opinions, it’s going to be a fun discussion.

Jay talks about his experiences with the movie, why he was pleased he DIDN’T read the comics ahead of time, and how he appreciates the love letter effect in the film.  Parris explains The Wife Effect, his feelings on why the romantic storyline deflated the overall film, and why Michael Cera might not have been the best choice for the role.

Two people enter the ring.  Where will it end?  Listen in and find out.

Then we wrap up the show with some talk about True Blood, Mad Men, why AMC is one of the greatest cable networks available, and our hopes and fears for the Fall TV season.  Believe it or not, we even manage to avoid spoilers in this section as well!

3

So now that you’ve seen where Parris and I have landed on the recent release of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, you’re probably wondering when the next episode will be released.

Wonder no more!  I’m here to tell you that our next episode recording will take place TOMORROW.  Yes, that’s right.  No extended wait, no lengthy delays.

We’ll be recording at 7pm Pacific time tomorrow, Wednesday the 18th.  We wanted to bring you our Scott Pilgrim discussion as quickly as possible, so it’s going to be a brief episode lasting about 30 minutes.  But we will be hosting the show live on Ustream, so you’ll be able to participate with us during the recording.

Hope you can join us!

Remember When Episode 37

4

You’ve been living in a dream world

Put on your pajamas and grab a cup of warm milk, because Episode 37 of Remember When is about to take you into the world of dreams.

We kick off our show with our latest “Great Movie Jay Has Never Seen”, discussing the 1980′s camp film “Dreamscape”.  It’s been a quarter of a century since the movie was released in theaters, and Dennis Quaid’s hair has certainly improved since then.  But whether or not Jay’s going to be able to appreciate this piece of nostalgia after all this time is questionable.  Listen in as he talks about the bad decision he made with the movie, as well as why he’s not kicking himself over it.

Then we dive into the Dream Within A Dream, talking about Christopher Nolan’s latest cinematic release, “Inception”.  Written and directed from the muse behind The Dark Knight and Memento, this film has critics raving and audiences walking out of their theaters in wonder.  We sit and offer our opinions on the film, offer our opinion on the ending (and why its various interpretations help the film achieve its brilliance), and rave about the newfound appreciation we have for Tom Hardy.  We also talk about what we think was lacking in the film, and how a second viewing should be mandatory for anyone seeing it.

Finally, we wrap up the show with some talk about our TV viewing habits of late, our thoughts on True Blood… and could a hulking be in the mix?

As always, Remember When continues to grow and thrive thanks to the joy, love, appreciation, and comments we get from our fans. If you enjoy our show, please leave us positive feedback on iTunes. We really appreciate it, plus it helps us reach people that have never heard of us! And if you’d like to share your thoughts with us, you can send us an email at or leave us a voicemail at 206-495-1732. Please note, long distance charges may apply.

Now recording Remember When Episode 37

2

Episode 37 is NOW RECORDING!  Or at least, it will be in about 10 minutes after I hit “Publish” on this post.

Want to join us?  Click this link.  It’ll take you to our live show, where you can listen in for free while we record the podcast.  After the show’s over, you’ll also have a chance to talk to us and ask any questions you might have.

Today’s show talks about Inception, Dreamscape… and maybe even a surprise or two.

See you soon!

Oh yes, Remember When Episode 37 is coming!

8

Yeah, we know.  It’s been a while since we announced the details on Remember When Episode 37… and it’s been longer still since we recorded an episode.  Well, that’s about to change.

First, let’s talk about the bad news.  We may or may not be talking about Some Kind of Wonderful on our next podcast.  While I’ve watched it, absorbed it, and have a fair bit to say about it… well, I’ll be honest.  It felt kind of weird going from a discussion about a movie like Inception (which is a weighty, thoughtful movie) to talking about something like Some Kind of Wonderful (which is…. not those same things).

So the bad news:  We’re changing up the “Great Movie Jay Has Never Seen” this week, and instead focusing on Dreamscape.  It just fits the whole Dream Adventure motif a lot better.  Now, that’s not to say we are EXCLUDING Some Kind of Wonderful from the show.  It might come up.  It might not.  But after 3 weeks of not talking about it with each other, Parris and I are CLAMORING to discuss Inception.  Seriously.  Do you know what it’s like to not talk to one of your best friends for three weeks about one of the most hyped movies of the year?  It’s agony, sheer torture, the likes of which the Geneva Conventions seeks to prevent.

Now, let’s get to the good news, and answer the most important question on your mind:  When the f**k is this episode finally getting released?

Well kids, you’re just days away from Remember When Episode 37.  We’re going to be recording LIVE on Friday, August 6th at 2pm Pacific.  You’ll be able to listen in as we talk about Inception and Dreamscape, then tangent off into the great unknown.  Could we end up meandering into another green zone?  It’s possible.  If you know us, you know our discussions have ADD. Besides, True Blood S3 has been…. well…. crap, let’s not talk about it now.  I don’t want to get worked up.

Of course, that means the published podcast will hit your streams a few days later.

So, join us on Friday!  We’re chomping at the bit, and you might be surprised to hear what I hated about Inception.

… or did I hate it?

Friday.  Be there, AND be square.  :)

What’s in store for Remember When #37

14

Wondering what’s in store for you in our next episode?  Well, we’re proud to announce the full roster of topics for Episode 37 of the Remember When podcast.

If you listened to our Firefly & Serenity show earlier this week (and you really should… it’s one of our favorite topics), then you probably already know that we’re going to be covering Inception.  The latest film from Christopher Nolan is due out next week, and if the 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (as of this writing) is any indication, we’re in for another intense adventure akin to our experience with The Dark Knight.

Tangent:  If you haven’t already, we urge you to avoid any upcoming reviews and information about this movie.  Go into it clean, with no expectations.  Sure, it’s tough, but we’ve both been told that the less you know about this movie, the better.

But back on track, we’re also pleased to announce that episode 37 will also include a brand new entry in Great Movies Jay Has Never Seen.  To counteract the heavy narrative of Christopher Nolan, we’re jumping back to the romantic comedies of the 1980′s.   I’ll be sitting down and watching Some Kind of Wonderful, a late 80′s film from legendary director John Hughes.  That’s right, I’ve never seen it.  Parris is a fan though.  And really, how can you go wrong with Lea Thompson?

(OK, good point.  I forgot about “Back to the Future II” for a second there).

We can’t give you a recording date for the live show just yet, but naturally, it’ll happen sometime after Inception comes out on the 16th.

Remember When – Episode 36

12

Remember When is back, and shinier than ever!

In our latest episode, we talk about Joss Whedon’s Firefly and the feature film follow-up, Serenity. A cult phenomenon that lasted a mere 14 episodes (3 of which weren’t aired in the original run), this show holds a special place in the hearts of Jay and Parris.

We kick off by discussing how the two of us were introduced to this legendary series, and talk about how a simple TV show turned us from enthusiastic fans into Browncoats (and what it means to be a Browncoat). And after a fresh viewing of the entire TV run, we take a look at which episodes are our favorite, which ones will end up crumbling over time, and remark at how extraordinary it is that so many of the episodes hold up over time. We even give you our selections for favorite and least favorite episodes.

Then we jump into the Serenity feature film. Both of us followed this piece of cinema joy as it progressed through creation, seeing it several times in pre-release fashion before it even hit the mass market. You won’t believe how many times Jay saw the movie in total! Serenity was a moment of beauty for both Parris and Jay, and we talk about some of our favorite scenes, pieces of dialog that tickled us, and what makes this such a spectacle to behold.

And hey, even in our Firefly-centric episode, we have a few tangents. Fortunately though, we saved those until the end, so if you’re not a fan of True Blood, you can skip right past it.

We close our show with a BIG BIG ANNOUNCEMENT that will be the first big step for Remember When’s future. This is something you won’t want to miss.

Remember When – Episode 35

2

You are a toy!

Less than a week after the release of our Honda Hybrid Confessions, we’re back with another episode of Remember When!

In this Special Edition release, we’re talking exclusively about Toy Story 3.  Jay and Parris had a chance to check out Pixar’s latest release during its opening weekend spectacle, and now that we’ve had a chance to process it, we sit down and discuss our reactions to the movie, what went right, and what could have been improved.

Parris talks about how the saga of movies has touched his life over the past 15 years, Jay looks at the movie from a newer perspective, and we look back fondly on the series that’s brought us so many laughs, gasps, and tears.

This is a spoiler-heavy podcast, so we encourage you to see the movie in theaters before listening to this episode.  But trust us:  Bring kleenex for the last few minutes of Toy Story 3.  You’ll need them.

In the last few minutes, we pit Alien versus Aliens, talk about what you can expect from the upcoming Firefly, and give you a hint about our Big Secret Plan for Remember When.
