Remember When – Episode 57

Iron Patriot Games

Look!  Up in the Sky!  It’s a bird… it’s a plane… IT BIRD PLANE!   Meanwhile, back on the ground, a brand new episode of Remember When is available for your auditory enjoyment.

Iron Man 3 hit theaters last week, and both of us have strong opinions on the first volley in Marvel’s Phase 2 initiative.  We converse about what it’s like coming off of The Avengers and how Iron Man 3 fails in that regard, what the movie does to be better than its atrocious successor in the Iron Man series, and how Robert Downey Jr. might be getting too old for this s**t.

Then we slide our way into talk about the most recent trailers for Star Trek Into Darkness and Man of Steel.  The former is just hours from release and we can’t wait to sink our fanboy teeth into this piece of cinematic goodness!  The latter is looking more and more promising.  And somehow, as we’re talking, we manage to find ourselves talking about an alternate universe where the Beatles reunite and Superman III is never made.

No, that’s not a joke.

Then it’s on to the TV in our lives! Mad Men is letting us down, and Parks & Recreation is on FIRE this season.  Parris encourages Jay to watch Archer, Parris talks about his change in viewing habits, and Jay encourages everyone to listen to The Americans… again.

As always, thank you to our fans for your continued support of our show. We continue to do the show because of all the wonderful feedback we get. Our fans’ passion drives us! If you’d like to reach us, give us a ring at 714-758-5027 (you can call or text)! Grimlock

Pick yourselves up on the floor!  Not only is Remember When back with a new episode, we’re on schedule!

Heads up, we’re coming in HOT!  Parris has just finished the first season of Sherlock after a year of pressure from Jay.  And boy, do we have a lot to talk about! Parris recounts his experiences watching the first season and what he thinks about the show’s brilliance.  Jay chats about an alternate universe where Benedict Cumberbatch nearly became the Eleventh Doctor.   And then, of course, we tangent off to talk about the news of David Tennant’s return to the Who-niverse for the 50th Anniversary Special…. and we somehow, inexplicably, end up talking about Beverly Hills 90210 (the original) and Saved by the Bell.  Go figure!

Jay lets it slip that he’s not a fan of Dinobots, which leads to a nostalgic trip down memory lane as we revisit our love of the original Transformers cartoon, the G.I. Joe movie, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, and Voltron.  Parris lets Jay know about the original edit of G.I. Joe where a beloved character nearly died, and Jay talks about his emotional stress from the original Transformers movie.

We briefly chat about the starting episode for the latest season of Mad Men, and then tangent on how both of us are coming up to an impasse with The Walking Dead… at different points in the show.   And naturally, this leads to catching up on where we’re at with other shows, like Parks & Recreation, Modern Family, and Community.  And then Jay talks about the first 15 minutes of Defiance, and how painful it looks.

Whether you like new stuff or old memories, this episode has something for you!

As always, thank you to our fans for your continued support of our show. We continue to do the show because of all the wonderful feedback we get. Super Goonies 8

Yes, it’s been a while.  But if it helps, WE MISSED YOU TOO!  And that’s why we’re back with Episode 55 of Remember When.  After a slight, minor, tiny delay due to Real Life, we’ve dusted off our microphones and come back for a fun and spirited conversation!

We kick off the show with a chat about Super 8.  This J.J. Abrams helmed adventure seeks to capture the spirit of Steven Spielberg and The Goonies by taking us back to the era of the late 70′s … but peters out near the end.  We talk about the successes and failures of the movie, and sidetrack into whether or not J.J. Abrams is really as great as Hollywood seems to think he is.

Then we sidestep our way into The Goonies, a timeless piece of 80′s pop culture.  A seminal work from our youth, this film ages like fine wine or good cheese.  In fact, it’s better to say it ages like Karen Allen (listen to the show… you’ll get this joke later)

And since we’re on a J.J. Abrams themed show, we talk about the news of his helming Episode VII, and what we think this means for the future of the Star Wars franchise.  Can our childhood memories be resurrected from the cruel, tortured world of the prequels?  Will we be able to feel proud for this sci-fi epic once again?  And how much lens flare can you fit into a single space epic?

We look ahead at the summer movie season.. there’s a LOT of stuff ahead (like Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Man of Steel) and a lot of stuff that has us worried (like Man of Steel and Kick-Ass 2).

And TV is in a WILD place right now! From the success of House of Cards to the general failure of pretty much every one of the major TV networks, it’s like we’re back in the wild wild west of content programming.

As always, thank you to our fans for your patience and understanding as the duties of both of our Real Lives come up! We’ve missed you and thank you so much for your words of support these past few months. If you’d like to reach us, give us a ring at 714-758-5027 (you can call or text)! 31:31 to 48:04 – J.J. Abrams taking over Star Wars… how do we feel? (plus talk of the casting rumors, side movies, and more)

Got any bubble gum?

OBEY!  CONSUME!  And most of all, kick a**.  The leading themes in “They Live”, John Carpenter’s cult film from the 80′s, bring us back into a new episode of Remember When.  Parris has never seen this little gem of cinema before, and takes time to sit down and watch Rowdy Roddy Piper in one of his greatest performances of all time.  We talk about how the movie holds up over the past 25 years, and how some of its themes have become far more relevant in modern times than they were when the movie first released.

Parris comes back from his viewing of Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter with an admission of his own, and Jay talks about how a second viewing of Prometheus helped to alleviate his ambivalence towards the movie.  Both of us have had second helpings of The Avengers as well, and we spend some time talking about the state of Superhero movies in the industry.

Then we progress into a series of fun, wild tangents through the state of TV as we get caught up on the ending of Mad Men, the sad progression of the latest season of True Blood, and the teasers for the new seasons of The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad.

Episode 51 is coming in a few weeks and will be dedicated to one of the summer’s most anticipated blockbuster titles.  Tune in on the weekend of the 21st for our in-depth analysis of The Lorax!  Or maybe we’ll take our time and see something less amusing

As we do every episode, we’d like to take this opportunity to give thanks to our many fans who encourage us, support us, and share their appreciation for the show. Remember When is a product of love, and we do this because of all the wonderful people in our listenership who share our passions, who agree and disagree with us, and then offer to buy us a drink if we’re ever in their town. Thank you to all of you.

Between shows, we keep up with fans on our Facebook page, through our Twitter account, or on the web at … well… right here!

The Starvation Games

No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you.  We’re back with a brand new, fresh episode of Remember When… less than two weeks since the last one!  It may seem like an April Fools Joke but trust us, there’s nothing to laugh at here…

Well, not unless you count The Hunger Games.  After watching the hit movie, we have some pretty strong opinions we want to voice about how underwhelming of an experience The Hunger Games was, and how we wish there had been a better chance to emotionally connect with the movie and its characters.  This section is filled with spoilers, but if you listen and have the movie ruined for you… we might be doing you a favor.

Then we progress into some continued discussions on the upcoming summer movies as we talk about the new trailer for the Total Recall remake, the new Prometheus trailer and our excitement for this new Ridley Scott endeavor (as well as our concerns about it) and Parris’ love for Charlize Theron in both Prometheus and the new Snow White Movie

We end the show with a discussion on the Walking Dead, Mad Men, and a chat about piracy and the logic behind “cutting the cable cord”.  It’s a fun and interesting talk.

As always, you can find us on Twitter, on Facebook, and on the web. Or, if you’d like to leave us feedback, you can call us at 206-495-1732 or email us at rw@filmtangent.com. Thanks, and enjoy the show!

Remember When – Episode 45

Let’s Do It Again

Six months ago, a podcast faded into a quiet slumber, hibernating its way through the slow winter crawl. Now, two show hosts emerge, bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to talk about the shows and movies they love. Remember When is back!

We return with a brand new, unscripted show that’s recorded on-the-fly as we sit down and catch up on the things we’ve missed over the past half year. We discuss the lengthy gap between shows (we’re very sorry) and talk about the things in our lives that have kept us focused elsewhere. But then we dust off our microphones and jump right into the swing of things.

And boy, is there a lot to discuss! Walking Dead is coming off its best season ever, Breaking Bad rang our bell (if you know what I mean), Mad Men’s about to return… cable TV is on FIRE right now! And with the summer roster of movies featuring titles like The Amazing Spider-man, The Dark Knight Rises, and Prometheus, 2012 is on track to be one of the best years for pop culture hounds.

Parris has a confession in the episode, and we take the tangents to a new level by walking right out of the Remember When podcast and back into our old UncleGamer chairs.

This episode is our way of getting back into the swing of things, and lets us catch up while catching you up as well.

Remember When is a product of love from Jay and Parris. We do this because we’re friends, and our friendship is the podcast. But we appreciate our listeners as well, and we thank you for the many kind (and a few that were less than kind) letters, emails, and voicemail messages you sent us these past few months. Having your support enables us to do the show and encourages us to keep doing this.

As always, you can find us on Twitter, on Facebook, and on the web. Or, if you’d like to leave us feedback, you can call us at 206-495-1732 or email us at rw@filmtangent.com. Thanks, and enjoy the show!

Remember When – Episode 39

3

After an unintentional hiatus due to real life, we’re pleased to bring you the glorious return of the Remember When podcast!

Although we promised you a Doctor Who & Torchwood episode, we’re pushing that off slightly.  At the top of the show, we explain why we’re postponing our venture into the realm of British sci-fi, and why the delay means better things for our listeners.

We spend the rest of Episode 40 talking about our views on other TV shows, both spectacular and spectacularly bad.  First up, we cover the third season of True Blood.  With the series finale airing last month, we look back at the season overall and discuss the elements we loved, the pieces that failed miserably, and what we think needs to be fixed before Alan Ball and the cast and crew start working on the fourth season.

Then we take a long awaited dive into the deep end of Mad Men.  Jay’s finally caught up with the show, and as AMC puts the fourth season to bed, we take a comprehensive look into the first few years of the show, talk about Jay’s experiences with getting invested in this AMC marvel, and Parris’ viewpoints on the complexities of the Draper family, and why they’re so fascinating to watch.  We talk about some of the unsung heroes of the show, our favorite moments, and why this can be a tough sell for new viewers.

We spend the last 30 minutes of the show working our way through the Fall season.  It’s been a lamentable slate of releases over the past few months, with early cancellations and very few stand out shows.  We talk about why this Fall TV season seems like one of the worst in recent history, some of the early standouts for us, and more.  We also discuss the remainder of episodes for Remember When in 2010, and the Big Movies we’re tackling at the start of 2011.

It’s a show filled with loads of tangents, as you’ve come to expect. The audio quality may be slightly off at points.  We apologize for that, and will work to have that fixed for our upcoming Doctor Who episodes.

Don’t forget to join our Facebook group!  It lets you keep up to date with the show in between our podcast releases, gives you the first look at our upcoming live recording sessions, and allows you to communicate with us and your fellow Remember When fans in between shows.  Check it out at this link.  You can also follow us on Twitter.

As always, Remember When continues to grow and thrive thanks to the joy, love, appreciation, and comments we get from our fans. If you enjoy our show, please leave us positive feedback on iTunes. Parris and Jay vs. The World

Prepare yourself for a battle royale.  Remember When is back with a new podcast, and this time, it’s a battle of opinions!

We sit down this week for a quick episode, as we look back on our respective experiences with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.  Jay loved it passionately, Parris hated it to the point of nearly walking out.  With two diametrically opposed opinions, it’s going to be a fun discussion.

Jay talks about his experiences with the movie, why he was pleased he DIDN’T read the comics ahead of time, and how he appreciates the love letter effect in the film.  Parris explains The Wife Effect, his feelings on why the romantic storyline deflated the overall film, and why Michael Cera might not have been the best choice for the role.

Two people enter the ring.  Where will it end?  Listen in and find out.

Then we wrap up the show with some talk about True Blood, Mad Men, why AMC is one of the greatest cable networks available, and our hopes and fears for the Fall TV season.  Believe it or not, we even manage to avoid spoilers in this section as well!

Remember When Episode 37

4

You’ve been living in a dream world

Put on your pajamas and grab a cup of warm milk, because Episode 37 of Remember When is about to take you into the world of dreams.

We kick off our show with our latest “Great Movie Jay Has Never Seen”, discussing the 1980′s camp film “Dreamscape”.  It’s been a quarter of a century since the movie was released in theaters, and Dennis Quaid’s hair has certainly improved since then.  But whether or not Jay’s going to be able to appreciate this piece of nostalgia after all this time is questionable.  Listen in as he talks about the bad decision he made with the movie, as well as why he’s not kicking himself over it.

Then we dive into the Dream Within A Dream, talking about Christopher Nolan’s latest cinematic release, “Inception”.  Written and directed from the muse behind The Dark Knight and Memento, this film has critics raving and audiences walking out of their theaters in wonder.  We sit and offer our opinions on the film, offer our opinion on the ending (and why its various interpretations help the film achieve its brilliance), and rave about the newfound appreciation we have for Tom Hardy.  We also talk about what we think was lacking in the film, and how a second viewing should be mandatory for anyone seeing it.

Finally, we wrap up the show with some talk about our TV viewing habits of late, our thoughts on True Blood… and could a hulking be in the mix?

As always, Remember When continues to grow and thrive thanks to the joy, love, appreciation, and comments we get from our fans. If you enjoy our show, please leave us positive feedback on iTunes.
