Remember When – Episode 69

Batman and the Chocolate Factory

Hello again! You’ve probably been wondering about us, and where we’ve been. It’s a long story that involved job changes, geographical moves, and general life circumstances. But let’s skip the details and get right into the goodness. Remember When is back on the air!

We should warn you though… this may be the most Superhero-y episode we’ve ever done! The last few months seem like they’ve been filled with nothing but comic book movies and trailers.

Our starting topic is Batman vs. Superman vs. Your Better Judgment. This trainwreck of DC’s has a lot to be ashamed about and boy, do we talk about that shame. We also cover the follow-up, Suicide Squad, which…. well, we don’t want to spoil EVERYTHING in the write-up.

Then we jump into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and look back at Civil War. It’s the Avengers 2 you deserved.

And while we’re on the topic of superheroes, Jay mentions that he’s all caught up on the Marvel Netflix shows. And boy, does he have some words!

In the middle of all this, we’ve got talk about the Rogue One trailers, the worries over Guardians 2 and Dr. Strange, the hope for DC’s salvation, and what’s coming up in the weeks ahead.
That’s right. Weeks. Not years. ūüėČ

Our show continues to exist because of your support. We say that every time, but it’s true. In fact, it was feedback from fans that helped make this show happen. You can talk to us between shows by emailing us or¬†stopping by¬†our Facebook page.

Game of Strings

Good podcasters always pay their debts. ¬† For¬†Remember When, that means we’re finally giving you what you’ve all been waiting for!

We’re heading to Westeros and taking a deep dive¬†into¬†Game of Thrones.

After several years of Parris’ urging to get on the bandwagon, Jay has finally (FINALLY) caught up on the show. ¬†He’s so eager to talk about it that we barely have time to do a show intro! ¬†We just jump right in.

We won’t lie: ¬†It’s an intense talk with some unexpected moments.

It took Jay a few attempts to get into the show, and you probably won’t be able to guess why. ¬†We rave about some of the best performances in the show, and it’s not just dominated by Peter Dinklage. ¬†And we talk about THAT MOMENT in Season 3, with The Wedding.

We don’t just cover individual episodes either. ¬†We talk about our crazy theories on how the show will end, and what’s in store for some of our favorite characters.

And the epic conversations don’t just stop at Dem Thrones! ¬†These past few weeks have given us a bevy of news from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. ¬†We’ve seen some of the first meaty scenes from Age of Ultron, we’ve seen the full roster of movies that’s coming for Phase 3…. and boy, are we giddy.

Cap 3. ¬†Civil War. ¬†The Infinity War. ¬†It’s just…. so beautiful. ¬†And we talk about them all, and how this giant story is about to get woven together.

There’s a lot of goodness in the show, if we say so ourselves!

If you’re enjoying our podcast, please send us a note and say Hi! ¬†We do this show out of passion for you, our listeners. ¬†Your positive comments, encouraging feedback, and multiple email messages asking if we’re dead are what help keep the show going. ¬†If you like Remember When, PLEASE let us know by joining our Facebook page and leaving a comment, or talking to us on Twitter at @rwpodcast.

Days of Star Wars Past

We’ve unofficially dubbed May as “The Month of Marvel” and to celebrate, we have a brand new podcast. Don’t call it a regular release, or you might jinx us!

Parris and Jay spend a few minutes catching up. We talk about the recent Episode VII announcements, and Parris cycles back on the recently rebooted Robocop.

Godzilla’s recent arrival in theaters piqued Parris’ curiousity and we talk about the latest take on a classic franchise. Thankfully, it’s nowhere near as bad as the Matthew Broderick era.

Then we hit the meat & potatoes of our show: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past. After a release like Captain America: The Winter Solder, Sony and Fox have a lot of competition in the Marvel universe. And we’re here to tell you why Spidey is already in need of another reboot, and why we liked Days of Future Past.

But that’s not all! Parris actually managed to watch the entirety of GI Joe: Retaliation. We can only assume that some kind of hypnosis was in effect because WOW… that movie is a train wreck. And speaking of train wrecks, Transformers 4 is looking like it’s going to live up to the standards of Transformers 3! Which is to say, the trailers look terrible. I mean really, Optimus Prime riding Grimlock? Yeesh.

Lastly, we wrap up with some talk on TV’s worst year in a long time, and a look back at Mad Men.

And if you’re waiting for a return to “Great Movies Jay Has Never Seen”, listen in at the end! We announce the movie selection for our next episode.

Our show exists because of YOU, our listeners! ¬†Your positive comments, encouraging feedback, and multiple email messages asking if we’re dead are what help keep the show going. ¬†If you like Remember When, PLEASE let us know by joining our Facebook page and leaving a comment, or talking to us on Twitter at @rwpodcast.

Captain Winter: The American Soldier

We interrupt the six month gap in our recording schedule to bring you this EMERGENCY podcast.

We hadn’t planned to record another episode this soon. But a funny thing happened… Captain America: The Winter Solder hit theaters last week.

And when the movie finished, and the two of us walked out of our local theaters, we quickly agreed… this couldn’t wait. We HAD to talk about Captain America, right away. No delays.

If The Winter Soldier has a single message to deliver to its viewers, it’s that Marvel isn’t playing around in Phase 2. They’re here to deliver. And it’s so serious, so wonderfully delivered, that the next hour of Remember When is exclusively dedicated to the epic proportions of The Winter Solider.

We don’t even tangent outside of the Marvel universe (much). And we spoil pretty much all of the Marvel movies to date. So if you haven’t seen The Winter Soldier yet, do yourself a favor and leave this episode alone until you do. You’ll be glad you waited.

Days of Matrix Past

The bi-annual release of Remember When is finally available!

We¬†don’t waste any time getting started with this show, and jump right into the good stuff! ¬†Our Robocop discussion is ALMOST IMMEDIATELY shanghai’ed by a tangent into the first teaser for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie and our discussion on it.

Then we jump back and look at House of Cards (with a TON of spoilers). ¬†How did the end of Season 2 fare, and what are our fears moving into a third season after this most recent story arc? ¬†We also play the “I need an adult” card as we chat about the intense, shocking events in Chapter 24.

Jay surprises everyone with a chat about the first two seasons of Archer, and some Game of Thrones talk.  YES WE TALK GAME OF THRONES (but not as deep as you might like)

Then we talk about the Marvel multi-verse, and our thoughts on the upcoming launches of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, as well as conversations about the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer.  With three separate studios vying for their own claim in the Marvel world, can reboots be far behind?

Speaking of reboots, how about that news on the possible Matrix reboot?  Is it time for us to look at that as a viable option?

And Jay, bless his heart, confesses that Parris was right about one of the recent Great Movies Jay Has Never Seen.

There are tangents, tangents galore here. ¬†How many tangents? ¬†There are so many that we can’t even time stamp things. ¬†It’s ridiculous. ¬†Bring a neck brace before listening to the show!

Iron Patriot Games

Look! ¬†Up in the Sky! ¬†It’s a bird… it’s a plane… IT BIRD PLANE! ¬† Meanwhile, back on the ground, a brand new episode of Remember When is available for your auditory enjoyment.

Iron Man 3 hit theaters last week, and both of us have strong opinions on the first volley in Marvel’s Phase 2 initiative. ¬†We converse about what it’s like coming off of The Avengers and how Iron Man 3 fails in that regard, what the movie does to be better than its atrocious successor in the Iron Man series, and how Robert Downey Jr. might be getting too old for this s**t.

Then we slide our way into talk about the most recent trailers for Star Trek Into Darkness and Man of Steel. ¬†The former is just hours from release and we can’t wait to sink our fanboy teeth into this piece of cinematic goodness! ¬†The latter is looking more and more promising. ¬†And somehow, as we’re talking, we manage to find ourselves talking about an alternate universe where the Beatles reunite and Superman III is never made.

No, that’s not a joke.

Then it’s on to the TV in our lives! Mad Men is letting us down, and Parks & Recreation is on FIRE this season. ¬†Parris encourages Jay to watch Archer, Parris talks about his change in viewing habits, and Jay encourages everyone to listen to The Americans… again.

As always, thank you to our fans for your continued support of our show. We continue to do the show because of all the wonderful feedback we get. Our fans’ passion drives us!¬†If you’d like to reach us, give us a ring at 714-758-5027 (you can call or text)! Or if you don’t want to hear the sounds of our voices, you can click through to our Facebook page¬†or¬†say hi to us on Twitter.

We have a Bruce

Parris and Jay, Assemble! The summer movie season has kicked off with a bang and it’s time to jump in feet first.

Our latest episode focuses exclusively on The Avengers, the Joss Whedon extravaganza that unites the recent Marvel movie stars into a single adventure. With a budget that’s estimated at nearly a quarter of a billion dollars, a marketing machine that’s been unstoppable over the past few months, and a huge wave of expectations in the hearts of the fans, The Avengers has a high bar to meet.

We sit down and talk about why Joss Whedon was the absolute perfect person to direct this ensemble film and how the movie is one of the perfect examples of how to treat a cast filled with high profile names. We each talk about who our favorite character in the movie was (we agreed) and who we liked least.

Then we pick through the movie piece by piece, finding some of the narrative elements that didn’t serve the movie and almost seemed cheap compared to the better parts of Avengers, or even the other Marvel films of the past five years. We also talk about why leaving out Ant Man in favor of the others was a great move, some of our favorite dialog moments, and a whole lot more.

Does the movie make a great start to the summer season, and do we really talk about The Avengers for almost 90 minutes? You’ll get one answer in the show notes, and the other by listening in!

Then we jump into our talk on the summer movie trailers. Jay caved and watched The Dark Knight Rises trailer, but his excitement is tempered by caution. Parris is over Spider-Man already but can’t wait for Prometheus. And of course, we talk G.I. Joe 2.

We even find out that Parris missed out on one of the greatest film experiences of the 80’s. Can you guess which one it is?

Remember When is a product of friendship and affection. We love our community and we love movies, and we create this show as our way of sharing that love and appreciation. Thank you as always to our many fans who support us and help us keep this show going. To join us in our conversations between shows, follow us¬†on Twitter, on Facebook, and of course,¬†on the web page you’re viewing right now. Thanks, and enjoy the show!
